When I went to the doctor for bloating and inflammation, I was surprised to leave with the diagnosis I did.

For awhile, I actually thought that the doctors were wrong, and scheduled an appointment with a digestive specialist. 

And while GERD can be accompanied by other conditions, and it is ALWAYS best to consult your doctor, you can truly heal your GERD by targeting one specific aspect of your body – your gut health.

What is GERD?

GERD is the term that stands for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, and happens when the acid from your stomach comes back through the esophagus and up to the mouth.

As you may have experienced, this is not a pleasant experience, and the acid can be dangerous to the throat – possibly even “burning” it with such low pH over an extended period of time.

What Causes GERD?

GERD happens and can be diagnosed after several times of experiencing acid reflux.

The esophagus, the tube lining from your mouth to your stomach, has an opening/closing mechanism known as the sphincter. 

This is supposed to open when food passed through, and shut after it has passed to the stomach.

However, if this does not happen as planned, you can experience the acid from the stomach creeping back up the tube – hence, resulting in acid reflux.

You are more at risk if you are:

  • A Smoker
  • Overeating/Overconsuming Foods
  • Obese
  • Pregnant 
  • Susceptible to Digestive Issues
  • An Unhealthy Eater

Symptoms of GERD?

You are likely to know if you are experiencing GERD based off the specificity of the side effects you will experience.

These include:

  • Heartburn/Chest pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Regurgitating swallowed food/liquids
  • Feeling a “lump” in your throat
  • Chronic coughing
  • New or worsening asthma

Natural + Home Remedies for GERD

If you experience GERD, or other digestive conditions, these are incredible remedies that personally transformed my life – allowing me to leave my acid reflux days in the past.

The easy, quick breakdown is below, and more dietary details are to follow. 

Here’s the brief glance:

1. Eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day

2. Chew, chew, and chew – the smaller the food going down, the easier to digest.

3. Focus your diet on healthy, anti inflammatory foods (more below)

4. Reduce inflammatory causing foods (more below)

5. Reduce/Eliminate carbonated beverages

6. Don’t push yourself too hard – focus on gentle, healing workouts. 

7. Sleep with your head tilted to more of an incline, allowing gravity to help with digestion.

8. Check your medications with your doctor if you feel as they could be part of the problem.

  2. Carbonated and Caffeinated Drinks
  3. High Fatty (Saturated Fat) Based Meals
  4. Alcohol
  5. Trigger Veggies (onions, garlic, tomatoes)

You will be changing your diet to focus on wholesome, healthy ingredients that are designed for our bodies to recognize them (avoiding chemical based additives + processing).
